Junior Golf Update Autumn 2013
We are now nine months into the new Junior Golf Scholarship Programme and with a great deal more activity now taking place we feel the time is right to send everyone an exciting update.
The 2013 Junior Golf Scholarship with coaches Stuart Rank and James Jewell
Update From Stuart Rank & The Academy Team
With your generous support the scheme was launched last October. A ‘Try-Out Day’ was staged where 50 talented juniors from the region pitted their skills against each other in an X-Factor style audition. The best 16 were then interviewed and a final cast of 12 (4 girls and 8 boys) between the ages of 9 and 16 were chosen. It was important that we not only chose the most talented players, but juniors who had the right personal attributes to be ambassadors for Stoke Park and who the members would be proud of.
November 2012 kick-started the yearly programme led by myself and supported by James Jewell, which includes one group class and one individual lesson per month. Alongside this, physical screenings are delivered in the gym and golf-specific fitness programmes are tailored to each junior. Each child now has a Scholars' golf bag and uniform, which they wear with pride whenever representing the Club or playing in Club events. The results have been fantastic across the board with many of the juniors reducing their handicaps significantly, representing the Club teams, the county, winning at county and even European level.
Testimonial from Peter Smith, BB&O U14's Boys Squad Manager
“As BB&O’s U14 squad manager it is quite obvious to me how beneficial Stoke Park’s Scholarship Programme has been for all the boys involved. Each boy has made significant progress during 2013 – not only in handicap terms, but in playing ability and confidence.
Being part of your programme has helped underpin their already undoubted talent and playing at Stoke Park has certainly helped many aspects of their game. They are a great credit to their club and are very good ambassadors for the county when they play.
I do not particularly want to single boys out but, as I write, John and Conor Gough head our Futures Tour Order of Merit age group – Conor knocked James Gregory off the top last week!! And you ‘discovered’ Aidan Osobase who has enormous potential”.
Below sets out the where the monies raised last year has been used. The Club awarded 12 x Junior Golf Scholars for a one-year period
12 x individual 1 hour lessons per month (1 per junior) = £900 per month
90 minute Scholars Clinic for all 12 players conducted by two Stoke Park Professionals = £225 per month
Annual Coaching Cost: £13,500
Scholars Team Kit,
Trolley, Bag, Rain Jacket, Pull Over, Vest, Shirts and Cap = £248 per Junior
Total Kit Cost: £2,976
Food & Beverage Cost: £720
It's only been through your generosity that we've been able to deliver such a comprehensive syllabus, which will one day produce a star of the future, home grown at Stoke Park.
One of the great benefits of the scholarship scheme has been the rejuvenation of the junior golfers we already had at the Club. With a greater pool of juniors to play, practice and compete with the current members have certainly upped their games to challenge the Scholars and this has helped everyone.
With the implementation of the programme, however, there have been a few concerns brought forward to the Golf Committee and management by members. Our desire is to overcome these as quickly as possible and ensure we have the on-going support of the membership in creating the best squad of young golfers in England.
In light of these concerns, the following steps will be implemented with immediate effect:
• Juniors with a handicap under 18 are permitted to participate in Club Medals
• Only one Junior permitted to play in each group of three in Club Competitions
• A Junior prize will be awarded for each of the medal and trophy competitions
• To be eligible to win a boarded competition/trophy you must be an intermediate member (18+ years) excluding Club Championships (Scratch)
We hope that along with the Golf Committee you will support these changes to the competition conditions and continue to encourage the young talent the Club is developing.
As you can read above it has been a fantastic start and we would like to kindly request your continuing support of the scholarship programme with a £20 contribution per golf member (as last year). This will be deducted from your house levy on the 1st November 2013. The total amount raised will be matched pound for pound by the Club.
